Commanding Conditioning: A Critical Reflection on Social Learning Theory
Introduction
Two weeks after taking up the course I gradually discovered and learned many different learnings and in-depth knowledge. Hence, with the help of related concepts, theories that we discussed, it served as a way for us to fully understand how “influential models” and “social factors” will influence an “individual”. And with the help of deep research, careful discussion and having the source materials needed, it helped to situate the concept developed by Albert Bandura.Albert Bandura for instance, is an influential social cognitive psychologist, developed the Social Learning Theory. However, scholars dominated his time and did not believe in his idea. Learning, according to them, is the result of classical and operational conditioning. To show that children learn and are influenced by simple observation, Bandura conducted the "Bobo Doll experiment," in which children learn violence, aggression, and other social behaviors through observation. On the other side, kindness and compassion can be imitated.According to Bandura, we learn through socializing with others and those around us—in simple greetings, conversation. We tend to assimilate, observe, and imitate an individual's behavior when we witness or see it, regardless of whether it is a positive or rewarding experience. And because we are imitating that aspect and behavior, we are unaware that we are doing so (Nabavi, 2012).
Introducing different theories.
On the one hand, Bandura believes in classical conditioning and operant conditioning theory. However, he believes that it is also critical to align the two critical concepts. Observational learning, in which behavior is learned through observation of the environment (Mcleod,2023). Mediating processes take place between stimuli and responses. Influential models (friends, classmates, parents, characters on children’s TV, teachers etc)for example, have a large impact on the standing model in observational learning. Because of the aforementioned influential models, an individual is affected by how they socialize, move, and act, which often results in imitating the behavior they see and experience. As an example, a child might see her parents washing dishes or folding clothes. Using observational learning, the child will imitate this, and later on he will also wash the plate and fold clothes as she saw in influential models such as his parents.Meanwhile, Bandura describes mediational processes as an active "Informational processor" that examines the relationship between behavior and consequences. On the one hand, Bandura proposes four mediational processes. Attention, the ability to focus on a behavior in order to form a mental representation. Retention refers to how a model (individual) remembers it, which influences whether or not it can be imitated. Reproduction, where the model's ability to do and perform what influential models do. Finally, the motivation is how much the observer wants to imitate something.
Using the social learning theory, I suddenly remembered the well-known saying "kung ano ang puno siya ang bunga," which we frequently overlook. On the one hand, it can be compared to social learning theory, in which influential models and social factors have a significant impact on how a model (individual) acts and how an individual becomes a person. On the one hand, it is vital that we fully grasp the fact that our actions have a significant impact on one another. A personality is formed through and with its aid, which will later imitate the behavior that he/she has experienced and witnessed.
Draft
